Help wanted: Two environmentally friendly board professionals for the Sustainability Fellows Program
AGB seeks to recognize and share the expertise of two board professionals who have been engaged in sustainability efforts on their own campuses. If you have been part of successful sustainability initiatives and are interested in mentoring others, please consider applying for this special fellowship program.
Across the country, individuals, including board professionals, are working on sustainability projects for their colleges and universities. However, they are often isolated and disconnected from others on their own campuses and at other institutions, unaware of the variety of national and international sustainability initiatives. To strengthen campus-based sustainability projects, these individuals need colleagues and mentors to connect with, to assist with their questions and to nurture their leadership skills.
The Higher Education Associations' Sustainability Consortium (HEASC), in collaboration with member higher education associations, including AGB, is offering two two-year sustainability fellowships. HEASC seeks Fellows with sustainability expertise to serve as mentors to others doing sustainability work on college campuses across the country. Their role is to nurture, connect, assist, and inspire the very important and challenging work being done by colleagues across the country. The vital role played by the HEASC Fellows is crucial to continuing the momentum of the higher education sustainability movement.
To be eligible, board professionals:
- Must understand and be committed to education for sustainability;
- Must have a certain level of experience on advancing sustainability initiatives with the board and chief executive;
- Must be available, on average, one hour per week to talk to others who have questions;
- Must be willing to help on national projects in sustainability;
- Must serve as conference presenters; and
- Must serve as mentors to other willing BPS who identify themselves directly or through AGB.
The Fellows designation would not come with funds, with the possible exception of travel funds for select meetings. It is hoped that all mentors can attend the HEASC annual meeting in spring 2009. Accepted applicants will be formally recognized by HEASC and the sponsoring association. The term would be for two years with a second term possible by filing a renewal application.
AGB is looking to sponsor up to two board professionals in the application process. If you are interested, please contact Merrill Schwartz, 202/776-0822 or Rich Novak, 202/776-0825.
